Sumatran rhino on brink of extinction<\/p>\n
BENGKULU, Bengkulu: An environmentalist warned on Monday that
\nunless adequate measures were taken, the Sumatran rhino, which
\nlive in protected forests in Bengkulu province, would soon become
\nextinct.<\/p>\n
The head of the Bengkulu provincial office of the Natural
\nResources Conservation Board, Agus Priambudi, estimated the
\nnumber of Sumatran rhinos (dicerorhinus sumatrensis) living in
\nBengkulu's protected forests at just 10 animals.<\/p>\n
\"Illegal hunting is considered to be one of the reasons for
\nthe continued decline in the population of the Sumatran rhino,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He further noted that only 50 Sumatran tigers (phantera tigris
\nsumatrae) continued to survive in Bengkulu's protected forests.<\/p>\n
He said wealthy people frequently went to Bengkulu to hunt the
\nrhinos and tigers.<\/p>\n
\"They usually pay the locals a large sum of money to hunt
\nthese beasts,\" Agus said.<\/p>\n
To prevent poaching, he said, his office had intensified
\nefforts to patrol the habitat of the rhinos and tigers in
\nnational parks in Semidang Bukit Kaba, southern Bengkulu, and
\nKerinci Seblat and Bukit Barisan, both in Rejang Lebong district.
