Sumatran elephants kill three people<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Elephants in a forest in Riau province have killed
\nthree people in two days, an official of the province's natural
\nconservation office said Friday.<\/p>\n
\"Two people were killed three days ago in a forest in Rokan
\nHulu district while another was killed yesterday in the same
\nforest but at a different location,\" said Lukman of the Riau
\nprovince nature conservation office.<\/p>\n
He said that the jungle is believed to be home to a herd of
\nabout 30 elephants and that human activity has encroached on
\ntheir habitat, prompting the violence.<\/p>\n
\"The victims were said to have entered the forest to seek wood
\nearly in the morning, when the elephants are usually still
\nresting. They must have startled the elephants who then attacked
\nthem,\" Lukman said.<\/p>\n
Wild elephants are still found in the jungles of the Sumatran
\nprovinces of Lampung, Aceh, North Sumatra, Bengkulu, South
\nSumatra and Riau.<\/p>\n
Conservationists say the elephants's habitat were increasingly
\ntaken over by resettlement, plantation and industrial forest
