        "content": "<p>The mass blackout event that recently hit most of Sumatra has become\na loud alarm for national energy security. The disruption, which\nparalysed activity in around 10 provinces and affected nearly 13 million\nhouseholds, is considered not just an ordinary technical constraint, but\na signal of deep systemic vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>Director of the Institute for Climate Policy &amp; Global Politics,\nEko Sulistyo, asserted that this incident is a symptom of fundamental\nproblems within Indonesia\u2019s electricity infrastructure. He conveyed this\nduring the Denpasar 12 Discussion Forum entitled \u2018Building Indonesia\u2019s\nElectrical Energy Infrastructure System and Renewal Towards 2045\u2019, held\nonline on Wednesday (10\/6).<\/p>\n<p>Eko highlighted Sumatra\u2019s strategic position as a pillar of the\nnational economy. With a contribution of 23 per cent to the Gross\nDomestic Product (GDP), the electricity disruption in this region is\ncertain to disrupt the supply chains of major commodities such as palm\noil and coal.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This regional disruption also disrupts the national supply chain,\nand even the global supply chain subsequently. This is what I think is\nimportant for mitigation and future preparation,\u2019 said Eko. He also\nregretted the absence of a comprehensive calculation regarding the value\nof lost load or the real economic losses due to the loss of electricity\nsupply.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond physical infrastructure issues, Eko issued a serious warning\nabout the financial risk looming over the energy sector, namely the\nweakening of the rupiah. The energy sector\u2019s dependence on imported\ncomponents and US dollar-based funding creates a phenomenon he termed\nthe dollar energy threat.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, exchange rate pressures can test national energy\nresilience. Without concrete mitigation measures against rupiah\nfluctuations, Indonesia risks being trapped in an energy crisis\ntriggered by foreign exchange pressures, as previously experienced by\nseveral other countries, leading to political instability.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018When external and internal pressures then meet, we are trapped in\nwhat I call the dollar energy threat. Dependence on energy causes our\ndollar needs to increase,\u2019 he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>While appreciating the efforts of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral\nResources and PT PLN (Persero) in strengthening the network and\nincreasing generation capacity, Eko urged the government to immediately\nformulate a strategy for mitigating exchange rate risk and more\ntransparent stress tests to maintain national energy sovereignty towards\n2045.<\/p>",
