        "content": "<p>Sultan reaffirms commitment to SMEs<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Yogyakarta<\/p>\n<p>Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengku Buwono X reaffirmed his<br>\ncommitment to strengthening the alliance between the local<br>\nadministration, universities and the private sector in developing<br>\nthe grassroots economy, especially in attacking poverty.<\/p>\n<p>The governor charted out his policy road map at a meeting he<br>\nheld with representatives of the business community and higher<br>\nlearning institutions, social and religious leaders as well as<br>\nthe chiefs of all regencies in Yogyakarta immediately after his<br>\ninstallation on Thursday for a second term (2003-2008).<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The open, frank discussions conveyed a very positive signal,<br>\nespecially to the business community, that besides poverty<br>\nalleviation and public services, pro-business policies will<br>\nremain at the top of the administration&apos;s agenda,&quot; said<br>\nbusinessman Tony Agus Ardie from Jakarta who attended the<br>\nmeeting.<\/p>\n<p>This commitment, Tony said on Saturday, was important to<br>\nmaintain business confidence, especially in the run up to the<br>\n2004 election year that may cause political turbulence.<\/p>\n<p>The governor is fully aware that generating productive jobs is<br>\nthe most effective way of attacking poverty and that SMEs play an<br>\nimportant role both in generating employment and in empowering<br>\nthe grassroots economy, Tony said of his conclusions from the<br>\nmeeting with the sultan.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled that Yogyakarta had been chosen by the United<br>\nNations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) as a model<br>\nfor the empowerment of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs)<br>\nemploying the three pillars -- businesses, universities and the<br>\nadministration.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This program is being undertaken under the Country Service<br>\nFramework for Indonesia the government signed with the Vienna-<br>\nbased UNIDO in Jakarta late November,&quot; added Tony who also is<br>\ndeveloping integrated shrimp farming in Yogyakarta in cooperation<br>\nwith local farmers, the Gadjah Mada University and local<br>\nadministration.<\/p>\n<p>He praised the three-pillar concept used by the Yogyakarta<br>\nadministration in empowering SMEs, involving businesses and local<br>\nuniversities under the leadership of the Yogyakarta governor.<\/p>\n<p>Tony said under the three-pillar concept, Yogyakarta<br>\nfunctioned as one of the country&apos;s centers of excellence in<br>\neducation, and could well lead the province to robust, broad-<br>\nbased growth.<\/p>",
