Sultan reaffirms commitment to SMEs<\/p>\n

Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengku Buwono X reaffirmed his
\ncommitment to strengthening the alliance between the local
\nadministration, universities and the private sector in developing
\nthe grassroots economy, especially in attacking poverty.<\/p>\n
The governor charted out his policy road map at a meeting he
\nheld with representatives of the business community and higher
\nlearning institutions, social and religious leaders as well as
\nthe chiefs of all regencies in Yogyakarta immediately after his
\ninstallation on Thursday for a second term (2003-2008).<\/p>\n
"The open, frank discussions conveyed a very positive signal,
\nespecially to the business community, that besides poverty
\nalleviation and public services, pro-business policies will
\nremain at the top of the administration's agenda," said
\nbusinessman Tony Agus Ardie from Jakarta who attended the
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
This commitment, Tony said on Saturday, was important to
\nmaintain business confidence, especially in the run up to the
\n2004 election year that may cause political turbulence.<\/p>\n
The governor is fully aware that generating productive jobs is
\nthe most effective way of attacking poverty and that SMEs play an
\nimportant role both in generating employment and in empowering
\nthe grassroots economy, Tony said of his conclusions from the
\nmeeting with the sultan.<\/p>\n
He recalled that Yogyakarta had been chosen by the United
\nNations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) as a model
\nfor the empowerment of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs)
\nemploying the three pillars -- businesses, universities and the
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
"This program is being undertaken under the Country Service
\nFramework for Indonesia the government signed with the Vienna-
\nbased UNIDO in Jakarta late November," added Tony who also is
\ndeveloping integrated shrimp farming in Yogyakarta in cooperation
\nwith local farmers, the Gadjah Mada University and local
\nadministration.<\/p>\n
He praised the three-pillar concept used by the Yogyakarta
\nadministration in empowering SMEs, involving businesses and local
\nuniversities under the leadership of the Yogyakarta governor.<\/p>\n
Tony said under the three-pillar concept, Yogyakarta
\nfunctioned as one of the country's centers of excellence in
\neducation, and could well lead the province to robust, broad-
\nbased growth.<\/p>",
