The Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku\nBuwono X, has urged tourists and newcomers not to recklessly attempt to\nclimb Mount Merapi, which currently remains at Level III or Alert\nstatus. According to the Sultan, safety must be the priority given that\nMerapi\u2019s volcanic activity still possesses the potential to endanger\nclimbers.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy hope for tourists, or rather for newcomers who intend to go\nsightseeing, is that I request they do not climb to the top (of Mount\nMerapi),\u201d he stated on Thursday (2\/7\/2026).<\/p>\n
The Sultan noted that residents living on the slopes of Merapi\ngenerally understand the volcano\u2019s characteristics, including the\nboundaries of safe areas. Consequently, local communities are considered\nto have a better understanding of the field conditions compared to\ntourists.<\/p>\n
However, this situation differs for visitors from other regions who\nmay not be aware of the latest developments regarding Merapi\u2019s activity.\n\u201cThe residents around Merapi understand and do not wish to evacuate,\nbecause the flow only reaches two to two and a half kilometres down and\ndoes not reach settlements, and they already know this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut newcomers, who are simply looking to vacation or holiday, may\nnot necessarily know about Merapi\u2019s activity. Therefore, please be\ncareful; for the time being, do not climb, that is all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The Sultan also emphasised that information regarding the current\ncondition of Mount Merapi falls entirely under the authority of the\nCenter for Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development\n(BPPTKG).
