Sulawesi species going extinct<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi (JP): Dozens of flora and fauna
\nspecies have gone extinct and many more are vanishing in
\nSulawesi due to human encroachment, researchers have found.<\/p>\n
The researchers, Chris Majors from Australia and Alimaturahim
\nfrom the Kendari-based SAMA Foundation, said yesterday that they
\nhave abundant evidence of the remains of the vanishing species.<\/p>\n
For example, over the past decade, at least nine species of
\nfish and three turtle species have disappeared from Sulawesi
\nwaters.<\/p>\n
\"Many more land and sea species are on the brink of
\nextinction. More detailed studies are needed,\" they said in their
\nreport as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
They pointed out that the extinction of marine flora and fauna
\nwas largely due to the destruction of coral reefs and the use of
\nchemicals for fishing.<\/p>\n
Many species on land are extinct largely because of a damaged
\necosystem resulting from the deforestation for plantations. (pan)<\/p>",
