Sukarno collection on display<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's first president Sukarno was widely
\nknown as a fine arts maniac. He collected many paintings and was
\nalso known to be a good painter himself.<\/p>\n
But who knew that Sukarno, Indonesia's founding father, also
\ncreated batik designs? Or composed songs? Perhaps, those were
\njust some of the many talents he possessed.<\/p>\n
Well, part of his collection, starting with paintings, batik,
\nstatues, China ceramics, keris (traditional Javanese daggers),
\nphotographs of Sukarno at various events and even drafts of his
\norations, will all be displayed in an exhibition at Gedung Pola
\non Jl. Proklamasi 56, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The building's location was once where Sukarno's former
\nresidence stood, the place from where he declared the country's
\nindependence on Aug. 17, 1945.<\/p>\n
The exhibition, staged by the Bung Karno Foundation, will run
\nfor one month.<\/p>\n
Guruh Sukarno Putra, the foundation chairman and son of
\nSukarno, said the six-story Gedung Pola building can only
\naccommodate 10 percent of Sukarno's collection.<\/p>\n
In conjunction with the exhibition, Guruh will also stage a
\nconcert commemorating his father on Aug. 15 at the Assembly Hall
\nof the Jakarta Convention Center in Senayan, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Guruh said that the foundation -- whose membership is
\ncomprised of his brothers and sisters Guntur, Megawati,
\nRachmawati, Sukmawati, Bayu, Kartika Sari and formerly the late
\nTaufan -- has decided to establish the Sukarno Center.<\/p>\n
The center, which is planned to be built on a 10-hectare site
\nclose to the capital, will not only accommodate Sukarno's
\ncomplete collection, but will also have facilities for a museum,
\nlibrary, multipurpose hall, an archive and research center. The
\ncomplex is expected to be completed in 2004. (yan)<\/p>",
