The planned suicide bombings in Indonesia's international
\nhotels and alien settlements in December 2003, said to have been
\nbased on Indonesian intelligence information as quoted by The
\nSunday Times and The Strait Times, have triggered more polemics,
\nspeculation, interpretation and caused anxiety.<\/p>\n
Some people have alleged that such reporting was just a
\nconspiracy by foreigners to create socio-political chaos in
\nIndonesia. Therefore, in order to prevent the information from
\nbeing attributed to the National Intelligence Agency (BIN), it
\ndenied that the information carried in both papers had come from
\nits officials.<\/p>\n
Apart from the actual source of this information, there are
\npositive aspects to ponder. First, the public will always be
\nalert against the danger of terrorism. Second, the need has
\narisen to consolidate and reorder the working system of
\nIndonesian intelligence for earlier detection of terrorist
\nactions. Third, common understanding will develop among social,
\npolitical, legislative and executive leaders concerning their
\nshared responsibility to deal with terrorism.<\/p>\n
We should avoid prejudice, mutual suspicion and baseless
\narguments by adopting an objective attitude. The fact that our
\ncountry has lately become a target of terrorist operations should
\nbe admitted as our common weakness. Meanwhile, the legislative
\nand executive circles themselves have not developed the same
\nvision and perception regarding this matter.<\/p>\n
