Amidst the dense settlements of Cilincing, North Jakarta, stands an\nold colonial-era building that remains inhabited to this day. Located on\nJalan Sungai Landak, the building has been the residence of Sugiyo\u2019s\nfamily, aged 72, for more than six decades. The building is almost\ninvisible, obscured by rows of other structures along the roadside.<\/p>\n
Sugiyo recounted that in 1961, his father, along with several other\nmembers of the army, was relocated to the building from the Lapangan\nBanteng area in Central Jakarta. \u201cAt that time, the troops stationed at\nIstiqlal were given a place here. If I am not mistaken, the Regional\nMilitary Commander (Pangdam) was Mr.\u00a0(Umar) Wirahadikusumah,\u201d he told\nKompas.com on Thursday (21\/5\/2026). \u201cThere were no houses back then.\nFrom here, you could see straight through towards the Cilincing District\nOffice.\u201d<\/p>\n
The old building is now known by residents as the Veteran Fisheries\nBarracks. According to Sugiyo, all the original inhabitants who moved to\nthe building were military families. \u201cThe ones originally living here\nwere all soldiers.\u201d<\/p>\n
The building was previously used by British troops as a headquarters\nduring the invasion of Batavia in 1811. Following Indonesia\u2019s\nindependence, the building was subsequently occupied by families of TNI\n(Indonesian National Armed Forces) veterans, including Sugiyo\u2019s family.\nTraces of the building\u2019s age are still visible today; the veranda, which\nserves as a gathering place for residents, features an old tiled roof\nsupported by green cast iron.
