Sudwikatmono to increase electricity generation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Sudwikatmono, the first businessman to be
\ninvolved in private power generation, plans to expand the
\ncapacity of his electricity facilities from 76 megawatts (MW) at
\npresent to 1,000 MW within five years.<\/p>\n
He told reporters here yesterday that one of his companies, PT
\nCikarang Listrindo, will expand the capacity of its power station
\nat the Cikarang Industrial Estate in Bekasi, West Java, from 76
\nMW to 600 MW, while another company, PT Kusumaraya Utama, will
\nset up a new power plant in Cilegon, also in West Java, with a
\ngeneration capacity of 400 MW.<\/p>\n
The government, concerned about its shortage of funds for
\npower development, has invited private-sector companies to
\nestablish electricity plants with a total capacity of 4,960 MW
\nduring this Five-Year Development Plan (Repelita VI) period,
\nbeginning in April. Minister of Mines and Energy I.B. Sudjana
\nsaid this week that 16 companies will likely get involved in the
\nestablishment of the plants in 16 locations.<\/p>\n
\"The expansion of the Cikarang power station will need an
\nadditional investment of US$700 million,\" Sudwikatmono said after
\na ceremony for the signing of a cooperation agreement between his
\ncompany, PT Napindo Mediapratama, and the State Electricity
\nCompany (PLN) on the organization of an electricity technology
\nexhibition at the Jakarta Fairgrounds here from Sept. 19 to Sept.
\n22.<\/p>\n

Cikarang Listrindo will cooperate with General Electric of the
\nUnited States in the expansion program, he said.<\/p>\n
In the first phase, the Cikarang power station's capacity will
\nbe expanded to 140 MW.<\/p>\n
Cikarang Listrindo is the first private company awarded
\nexclusive rights by the government to supply power to industrial
\nestates. According to Sudwikatmono, the company has set a billing
\nrate of Rp 172.96 (eight U.S. cents) per kilowatt hour (kWh) for
\nits electricity.<\/p>\n
The rate is far higher than the Rp 154.21 rate charged by PLN
\nto its customers.<\/p>\n
\"We sell the excess of our output to PLN at a price of Rp 115
\nper kWh,\" Sudwikatmono said.<\/p>\n
He also said that the establishment of the Cilegon plant,
\nwhich must wait for approval from the government, will need an
\ninvestment of $400 million.<\/p>\n
His companies have received approval from the government's
\noffshore commercial loan supervisory team to accrue foreign
\nborrowing for their electricity projects.<\/p>\n
Two Chinese companies, Int'l Machine Corp. and Herbine Power
\nPlant Equipment Corp, will provide technology for the Cilegon
\nproject, which will use coal for its firing system.<\/p>\n
The coal for the project will be supplied by PT Bukit Sumur
\nWijaya, a subsidiary of Wijaya Group, owned by Sudwikatmono and
\nthe hotel business conglomerate, Sukamdani Gitosardjono.<\/p>\n
Besides the private sector, PLN has planned to increase its
\ntotal generation capacity by 8,040 MW during the Repelita VI
