Subowo appointed new Perpani chairman<\/p>\n

After weeks of uncertainty, the Indonesian Archery Association
\n(Perpani) has confirmed that former banker Atmosardjono Subowo is
\nits new chairman for the 2003-2007 term.<\/p>\n
The confirmation of Subowo's appointment was announced by
\nchairman of the National Sports Council (KONI) Agum Gumelar here
\non Thursday.<\/p>\n
Perpani had turned to Agum for help following a deadlock
\nduring its congress on March 20, which resulted in a fallout
\nbetween former KONI official IGK Manila and the outgoing Perpani
\nchairman Hayono Isman.<\/p>\n
\"After consultation with the archery authorities, we have
\ndecided that Pak Subowo should be the right person for the post.
\nHe has pledged his commitment to the sport,\" Agum told reporters.<\/p>\n
Subowo, 67, who was not present during the announcement, was a
\nformer director of a private bank. He is currently one of the
\npatrons of the bankers' association Perbanas.<\/p>\n
He is also a former official of the Indonesian Swimming
\nAssociation (PRSI).<\/p>\n
Agum said Subowo, the husband of KONI deputy chairwoman Rita
\nSubowo, had been picked from a two-person shortlist. But he
\nrefused to name the other. Instead, Agum said: \"it was either Pak
\nHendri (Pribadi), Hayono, Manila or Arifin (Panigoro).\"<\/p>\n
Arifin Panigoro, a businessman and a legislator for the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), Manila
\nand Minister of Trade and Industry Rini Soewandi were considered
\nas possible candidates for the Perpani chairmanship in the lead-
\nup to last month's congress.<\/p>\n
Arifin and Rini reportedly withdrew themselves from
\nconsideration during the congress, leaving Manila as the only
\nother. However, it seemed that the floor, led by Hayono, blocked
\nhim and prompted a stalemate.<\/p>\n
\"They (Arifin, Rini, Manila, Hayono) are not in the new board
\nbut they have promised to help Perpani develop national archery,\"
\nAgum said.<\/p>\n
Archery in Indonesia, is famous for its sensational
\nperformance at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, where an Indonesian
\nfemale team won a silver for the country, the first medal
\nobtained in the Olympics.<\/p>",
