Subagyo elected as badminton body chief<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Subagyo Hadi Siswoyo, the Army's deputy chief of
\nstaff, has been elected as the chairman of the Badminton
\nAssociation of Indonesia for the 1997-2001 period.<\/p>\n
Subagyo, who replaced Soerjadi, said yesterday at the closing
\nof the association national congress that he would reform the
\nassociation's athletes' development program to retain the
\ncountry's supremacy in the sport.<\/p>\n
Subagyo said there were three main problems that he would
\ntackle in chairing the organization.<\/p>\n
\"Firstly, the association must improve its lobbying of other
\nbadminton countries (to benefit Indonesia).\"<\/p>\n
Subagyo said the association must also focus its attention on
\ntalent scouting in provincial branches.<\/p>\n
\"We shouldn't have active and potential branches side by side
\nwith inactive branches. The association must consider encouraging
\nthe inactive branches to be more dynamic,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"We also have to find new ways to improve the national
\nbadminton center to boost our players' standard,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Subagyo said the association would need more funds to solve
\nthe three problems.<\/p>\n
\"We also have to concentrate on increasing the Badminton
\nFoundation fund. The fund's interest is not enough to finance the
\nassociation's annual spending. We'll try to figure out how to
\nraise more funds but we still don't know how,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Aburizal Bakrie, a member of the association's patrons board,
\nsaid Saturday that the foundation had assets of Rp 12 billion
\n(US$3.3 million).<\/p>\n
Subagyo said that as a military officer he would not be afraid
\nto punish officials who tried to take advantage of his position
\nfor himself.<\/p>\n
Subagyo was backed by 24 provincial branches at the congress.
\nHe is to appoint his officials with assistance from Karsono, the
\nJakarta branch chairman, and Suhendarto, the Irian Jaya branch
