Subagyo disappointed by Taufik's absence<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI)
\nchairman Subagyo Hadisiswoyo and world number one men's singles
\nshuttler Taufik Hidayat are playing their own personal game of
\nhide-and-seek.<\/p>\n
Taufik demanded Subagyo attend the hearing on Wednesday about
\na statement he made after winning the Asian Badminton
\nChampionships earlier this month.<\/p>\n
Then Taufik himself apparently failed to show up for the
\nclosed-door meeting between officials and players at the
\nIndonesian Badminton Center in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"I'm quite disappointed Taufik didn't show up for today's
\nmeeting even though he had been told (to appear) by Pak Karsono
\n(PBSI executive director),\" Subagyo said after the four-hour
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
\"It means Taufik has once again acted without discipline. He
\nbroke his own promise.\"<\/p>\n
The meeting on Friday was attended by PBSI secretary-general
\nLeo Chandra Wiranata; men's doubles players Candra Wijaya, Flandy
\nLimpele, Halim Heryanto, Rexy Mainaky, Ricky Subagja, Sigit
\nBudiarto and Tony Gunawan; women's doubles players Carmelita,
\nDeyana Lomban and Etty Tantri; women's singles shuttler Lidya
\nDjaelawidjaja; mixed doubles player Minarti Timur; and Taufik's
\ncoach Mulyo Handoyo.<\/p>\n
\"Most players are going to Yogyakarta to attend the wedding of
\nmixed doubles player Tri Kusharjanto on Saturday. I don't know
\nabout others, including Taufik, because I can't reach him on his
\ncellular phone,\" said the former chairman of the Players Board,
\nRexy.<\/p>\n
The meeting on Friday was held to discuss with the players
\nseveral issues, mainly concerned with PBSI's financial condition,
\nplayers' sponsorship contracts and prize money.<\/p>\n
\"We told them PBSI suffered a deficit of some Rp 6 billion
\n(US$650,000) in the 2000 fiscal year. PBSI received some Rp 4.3
\nbillion (in funding), while its expenses reached Rp 10.3
\nbillion,\" Subagyo said.<\/p>\n
Of the Rp 4.3 billion, Rp 2.3 billion came from the Indonesian
\nBadminton Foundation, while the contract with Japan-based sports
\nequipment manufacturer Yonex accounted for the other Rp 2
\nbillion.<\/p>\n
\"We also explained that we must first deduct the 15 percent
\nincome tax from their pay, as regulated by the government. The
\nremaining amount is divided 25 percent for PBSI and 75 percent
\nfor the players,\" said Subagyo.<\/p>\n
\"Most players think PBSI took two deductions from their money,
\nfirst the income tax and then PBSI's share. But then they were
\nable to accept our explanation.\"<\/p>\n
Subagyo will have another meeting on Monday with the veteran
\nshuttlers to discuss conduct in the badminton center's dormitory.<\/p>\n
\"Both officials and players will discuss regulations to be
\napplied at the center. The meeting will also look for ways to
\nenable former shuttlers to contribute their ideas for the
\ndevelopment of the sport.<\/p>\n
\"Another issue is the training schedule during the upcoming
\nRamadhan fasting month. We have yet to decide whether to have the
\nshuttlers continue training or give them time off.<\/p>\n
\"Since the interclub national championship is coming up, we
\ncould send shuttlers back home to train with their clubs for the
\nbiennial event. But if they want to stay at the center, they are
\nvery welcome.\"<\/p>\n
Rexy said after the meeting on Friday that most shuttlers were
\nsatisfied with the explanations concerning their financial
\nrights.<\/p>\n
\"Now we know that there are several procedures that must be
\ntaken before we receive our money. We just found out that the 15
\npercent income tax first has to be deducted from our money.\"
