Studying abroad has special meaning<\/p>\n
Every year, several Indonesian students travel abroad
\nin order to obtain their bachelor, master and Ph.D
\ndegrees. There are several advantages in obtaining or continuing
\ntheir studies abroad.<\/p>\n
First of all, is the experience of assimilating with an
\nenvironment that is quite different compared with the one in
\nIndonesia, especially in the developed West, where life is quick
\nand the system more complicated.<\/p>\n
Another is the difference in systems, such as the
\neducation, administration, politics and lifestyle of the
\ncommunity the student is involved in. Assimilating with the
\nforeign community, mainly the academic community, gives the
\nopportunity for one to adapt, compete, transfer or receive new
\nexperiences through direct communication, observation and
\ninvolvement. When returning, they will not only have learned new
\nexperiences, but will be affected, maybe intensely, by the
\nculture they were in.<\/p>\n
One's way of thinking, talking and planning depends on their
\nintellect and experiences. And with overseas experience, not only
\nmay they be involved in communication, but also activities such
\nas research. Once they return, they will practice what they have
\nlearned abroad.<\/p>\n
Many say that obtaining overseas degrees will give a
\nperception of quality, prestige and respect due to the academic
\naccomplishment achieved in the study and many will be
\nenthusiastic about their presence in the academic world and
\nin the public.<\/p>\n
We have all heard about the "Berkeley Group" during
\nthe New Order or the "Team", which are well known about their
\nperception and style in planning development in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
What is a style? Style may be defined as "looks" as Americans
\nsay, the way one talks or thinks. But perceptions are a way of
\nthinking that is shared by a group, which may be part of the
\nsystem.<\/p>\n
Why are overseas experiences so important, or should I say
\nspecial? Once an Indonesian student starts his or her first day
\nin the foreign university, they will have
\nto communicate in a foreign language, which requires time to
\nmaster, not only in communicating but also in explaining, arguing
\nand persuading. Through communication, the conversation
\ndevelops from greetings to story-telling to business
\nnegotiations. Even one who is not experienced in communicating
\nwill be forced to do so in order to keep up with the pace.<\/p>\n
Many local students read books, including some in English,
\neven though there are many who still consider it too difficult to
\nunderstand. Others actively participate in campus organizations
\nand are involved in scientific research, but are they
\nready to adapt, assimilate, compete with and outperform their
\ninternational counterparts?<\/p>\n
