Study on marine pollution<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Sjur Torgersen
\nhanded over a master plan on the prevention and response to
\nmarine pollution and marine disasters in Indonesia to the
\nDirectorate General of Sea Communications of the Ministry of
\nCommunications.<\/p>\n
The study was funded by a grant from the Norwegian Agency for
\nDevelopment Cooperation and conducted by Norwegian Det Norske
\nVeritas in cooperation with the Directorate of Sea
\nCommunications.<\/p>\n
Torgersen said the study was aimed at the prevention of
\nmaritime pollution from ships and offshore drilling activities in
\nIndonesia, encouragement of preparedness in combating pollution
\nfrom oil spills and implementation of a legal framework to
\naddress the exploitation and management of the marine sector
\nhere.<\/p>\n
The study identified four areas in Indonesia -- the Makassar
\nStrait, Malacca Strait, south coast of Java and Lombok Strait --
\nas being prone to oil spills due to a heavy flow of sea traffic
\nand an existence of a great number of oil drilling sites. (cst)<\/p>",
