Study group focusing on ASEAN ties with India<\/p>\n
A new study group focusing on the growing relationship between
\nthe Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India has
\nbeen formed by Singapore's premier think tank, organizers said on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
The initial focus will be on economic issues, with the scope
\nexpanding later to political matters and security cooperation,
\naccording to the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.<\/p>\n
Besides bringing together regional experts on relations
\nbetween the ASEAN and India, the group hopes to draw on
\nexpatriate Indian brain power available in Singapore.<\/p>\n
\"We noticed the lack of focused studies on various aspects of
\nIndia-ASEAN relations and therefore felt that the formation of a
\nstudy group would lead to a better understanding of the issues,\"
\nK. Kesavapany, the institute's director, told The Straits Times.<\/p>\n
India's growing security ties with the United States and
\ngreater presence in the Indian Ocean also merit closer study,
\nKesavapany said.<\/p>\n
The study group includes scholars, industry representatives
\nanalysts and officials from government ministries.<\/p>\n
A two-day forum on ASEAN-India Economic Relations has been
\nscheduled for Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 in Singapore.<\/p>\n
\"Serious and in-depth research on relations between ASEAN and
\nIndia has been rather limited,\" said Rahul Sen, coordinator of
\nthe group.<\/p>\n
ASEAN groups Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the
\nPhilippines, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar (Burma).
