Study center to be established at Jakarta Historical Museum<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Historical Museum will have a study
\ncenter for Jakarta history, an official said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The museum director, Tinia Budiati, said the center is
\nexpected to become the place for research activities, including
\nlibrary and archive searches on city history.<\/p>\n
\"Data on Jakarta history has been so spread out in different
\nplaces that those who need access, must go to several
\ninstitutions. It is expected that through the study center,
\npeople will find any material they need under one roof,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Tinia said the project would involve other institutions. She
\ndid know when construction would begin, because the center is
\nstill in the planning stage.<\/p>\n
\"What is clear is that many kinds of learning activities can
\nbe held here like discussions, research, seminars and data
\ncollection,\" she said, adding that through the center, the museum
\nlibrary -- which now has about 2,000 old books -- would also be
\nrevitalized.<\/p>\n
She said the center is expected to be able to meet the
\npeople's demand to uncover Jakarta history that remains unknown
\nuntil now.<\/p>\n
The existence of a historical museum in the city with
\nmanagement always complaining about the lack of visitors was not
\npopular among the residents.<\/p>\n
Consequently, the city museum and restoration agency recently
\norganized several activities to revive the seven museums under
\nits auspices, including the Jakarta Historical Museum, namely,
\nexhibitions, festivals and competitions.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Tinia hinted last week that the city administration,
\nin cooperation with Amsterdam-based Tropenmuseum, will hold a
\nseries of training programs on museum management for employees of
\ncity-owned museums starting in the middle of this year.<\/p>\n
She said the programs would last three years, including
\nspecial programs that will be conducted in the Netherlands for
\nselected trainees.<\/p>\n
\"The training will be held in two stages and will focus on
\nconservation and museum collection management. At the end of the
\nproject several selected trainees will undergo further training
\nin the Netherlands for another eight to 10 months.<\/p>\n
Tinia, who is involved in the project planning, said each of
\nthe city's seven museums would select three of the staff members
\nfor the programs.<\/p>\n
\"Hopefully, the project can start in October following a
\nsurvey conducted by the Tropenmuseum experts in May and June,\"
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
There are seven museums under the auspices of the city
\nadministration. Three of them are in Central Jakarta, the Textile
\nMuseum, the 1945 Fight for Freedom Museum and the Memorial Park
\nMuseum.<\/p>\n
Two museums are in North Jakarta: the Maritime Museum and the
\nPuppet Museum. While in West Jakarta, there are the Fine Art and
\nCeramic Museum and the Jakarta Historical Museum. (ind)<\/p>",
