Students winning painting depicts exploitation by elite<\/p>\n

Holding a canvas, paint and pallet, two senior high school
\nstudents rushed into the multipurpose hall of the Bina Nusantara
\nschool on Jl. Iskandar Muda in South Jakarta on Saturday.<\/p>\n
After taking their seats, the pair immediately discussed what
\nthey would paint during the visual arts competition as the
\norganizers told them to draw anything related to the country's
\ncorruption-related chaos.<\/p>\n
Marsya Ramita and Juanita from Bina Bangsa high school, who
\nended up the winning team in the painting competition, chose a
\npuppeteer as their main subject, which they said symbolized the
\ncountry's elitist politicians.<\/p>\n
\"We initially wanted to draw a chair to represent their high
\nposition, but as we started painting we changed our mind. I think
\na puppeteer is more interesting,\" said Marsya Ramita, who said
\nthis was the first such competition she had entered.<\/p>\n
Marsya and Juanita painted huge hands -- representing the
\npowerful politicos -- holding tiny puppets symbolizing the
\nIndonesian public.<\/p>\n
The country's powerbrokers, according to Marsya and Juanita,
\nare just exploiting and cheating the public for their own
\ninterests.<\/p>\n
Marsya and her partner were just one of 13 teams of high
\nschool students participating in the visual arts competition
\norganized by Bina Nusantara (Binus) high school.<\/p>\n
The organizers said they had sent out invitations to about
\nsixty high schools across Greater Jakarta, but only eighteen,
\nmostly national-plus high schools, sent their representatives,
\nincluding Bina Bangsa, SBI Madania, Global Jaya, Pelita Harapan,
\nHarapan Bangsa, SMAK IPEKA Tomang, SMAK Tirta Martha and SMAN 8.<\/p>\n
In addition to the art displays, there were events for
\neconomics, mathematics and indoor soccer also on at the Blue
\nFeather Competition.<\/p>\n
The economics competition required each group to answer twenty
\nmultiple choice questions about a case study, while the
\nmathematics competition had participants try to solve about 50
\nproblems in 75 minutes.<\/p>\n
Ilona Gunawan, who was first in economics, along with her two
\nclassmates, said that they were very eager to enter the
\ncompetition.<\/p>\n
\"Although the competition was held on the weekend, I didn't
\nhave any objections. I just wanted to experience and test my
\ncompetence in economics. I think the competition also heightened
\nmy knowledge of the subject,\" Ilona said.<\/p>\n
In mathematics, Kevin Yaspir from Pelita Harapan high school,
\nwho also recently won the National Olympiad competition in
\nJakarta, took first place.<\/p>\n
The Blue Feather Competition coordinator Boy Luna said the
\nevent was aimed at encouraging students to explore their talents.<\/p>\n
\"Hopefully, by this competition we can motivate national-plus
\nhigh school students to explore their talent, not merely in the
\nacademic subjects, but also in art and sports. I believe by
\ncompeting with other students, they can improve their talents and
\ntheir competence,\" he said.<\/p>",
