Students warned on national unity<\/p>\n
DEPOK, West Java (JP): Minister of Information Harmoko warned
\nstudents yesterday against printing articles in campus
\npublications which could harm national unity.<\/p>\n
Opening a journalistic training program for students from
\nvarious institutions being held at the University of Indonesia
\n(UI), Harmoko said in a written speech that campus publications
\nshould be \"accurate\", \"objective\", \"display systematic analysis
\nand clear thoughts\" and \"show psychological maturity\".<\/p>\n
The speech was read by Subrata, the Director General for Press
\nand Graphics of the Ministry of Information.<\/p>\n
About 100 students from various universities are taking part
\nin the week-long training program, which will be addressed by a
\nnumber of senior journalists, including Herry Komar of the Gatra
\nweekly and Sinansari Ecip of the Republika daily.<\/p>\n
Lectures will also be given by several experts on issues
\nrelated to journalism, including Loebby Loqman, who is an expert
\non the legal aspects of the press.<\/p>\n
Organized by the UI student senate, the course aims to provide
\nstudents with a real taste of the process of covering events,
\nwriting reports and producing a newspaper.<\/p>\n
\"This will be a real thing,\" exclaimed one participant. \"A lot
\nof things happen every day at UI, and we can report on them.\"<\/p>\n
The students participating in the program have come from
\ncities as far away as Surabaya and Malang, both in East Java.<\/p>\n
UI Rector M.K. Tadjuddin was also present yesterday and,
\naccompanied by political expert Juwono Sudarsono, inspected an
\nexhibition of past UI publications, the Warta UI tabloid among
\nthem.<\/p>\n
Harmoko in his speech said students must observe as strict a
\nstandard of conduct as that followed by members of the Indonesian
\nmass media.<\/p>\n
\"You, too, need a code of ethics,\" the speech said, pointing
\nin particular to a clause in the Indonesian journalists' code of
\nethics which states that the press should be responsible and
\navoid running stories which could be harmful to national unity.<\/p>\n
Harmoko said that a campus publication was a sub-system of the
\nuniversity to which it belonged and that, as such, it should
\nadhere to the various regulations applying on the campus.<\/p>\n
He told the students to remember that the world was undergoing
\nrapid transformation, \"both physically and mentally\", which
\npresented society with increasingly complicated challenges.<\/p>\n
\"The situation is changing very rapidly, and the impact is
\nfelt in society, including in higher education institutions,\" he
\nsaid, adding that students should respond to the situation
\n\"appropriately\".<\/p>\n
The student press should be able to contribute to the
\nuniversities' role as centers for the development of science and
