Students want blood for Abepura<\/p>\n
Students and residents claiming to be from the Papua Solidarity
\nfor the Abepura Incident staged a protest in Jayapura on Monday,
\ndemanding the death penalty for two police officers
\ncharged for their roles in human rights abuses four years ago in
\nAbepura.<\/p>\n
In their protest outside Papua's legislative council, the
\nprotesters demanded that Brig. Gen. Johny Wainal Usman and Sr.
\nComr. Daud Sihombing be sentenced to death for their roles in the
\nincident.<\/p>\n
\"What is the penalty for killers?\" asked a protester, Cosmos
\nYual, in his speech. \"Death,\" responded the protesters.<\/p>\n
Cosmos said he was disappointed upon learning that the
\nprosecutors only demanded 10 years' imprisonment for Johny and
\nDaud, although the two were responsible for the clash.<\/p>\n
\"Three people were shot dead and five others died because of
\ntheir injuries,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The protesters also demanded that President Susilo Bambang
\nYudhoyono pay attention to the case and ensure the two were
\nsentenced according to their crimes.<\/p>\n
The human rights abuses took place on Dec. 7, 2000 in Abepura,
\nabout 20 kilometers south of Jayapura, after 30 residents armed
\nwith sharp weapons attacked and set fire to the Abepura Police
\nstation. Sgt. Petrus Eppa was killed and three other policemen
\nwere wounded in the melee.<\/p>\n
In a separate attack on the Irian Jaya Autonomy office in
\nAbepura, a security officer, Markus Padama, was killed. About an
\nhour later, the Abepura Police, assisted by the Jayapura Mobile
\nBrigade paramilitary unit, began a hunt for the perpetrators by
\nscouring nearby residential areas and hostels, including a
\nstudent dormitory.<\/p>\n
During the searches, police arrested, assaulted and tortured
\nat least 99 people, whom they claimed were suspects in the police
\nstation attack. Three people were reportedly killed in the
