Students urge Akbar verdict<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: More than 100 university students rallied outside the
\nSupreme Court on Thursday, demanding the court to process the
\ncase against Speaker of the House of Representatives Akbar
\nTandjung for his corruption conviction which he has appealed to
\nthe Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
Rico Marbun, chairman of the University of Indonesia's
\nStudents Executive Body, said the court must not give extra
\nprivileges to Akbar.<\/p>\n
\"He's been convicted, but he's still allowed to lead the
\nHouse, lead his party and nominate himself as a presidential
\ncandidate,\" he told reporters.<\/p>\n
Akbar, who is also the chairman of the Golkar Party, is a
\npresidential candidate.<\/p>\n
Akbar was sentenced last year to three years in jail for
\ninvolvement in the Rp 40 billion misuse of the State Logistics
\nBody (Bulog) fund. The Jakarta High Court upheld the verdict and
\nadded one year to the sentence early this year, but Akbar has
\nremained free pending his appeal to the Supreme Court, and no
\ninternal House sanctions have been meted out.<\/p>\n
Justice Paulus Effendy Lotulung had earlier said that he would
\nissue Akbar's verdict before the country goes to the polls in
