Students to hold seminar on autonomy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A group of student organizations will hold a
\ntwo-day seminar here on Monday and Tuesday on wide-ranging
\nautonomy and federalism.<\/p>\n
The seminar will be organized by a joint committee comprising
\nrepresentatives from several student organizations, including
\nForum Kota, Jakarta; Forum Koordinasi Masyarakat Bersatu,
\nBandung; Dewan Mahasiswa Untuk Demokrasi, Medan; Posko Perjuangan
\nRakyat, Denpasar; and Forum Demokrasi and Aliansi Mahasiswa Jambi
\nuntuk Perubahan, Jambi.<\/p>\n
About 55 student and non-governmental organizations and
\nindividuals are expected to participate in the seminar, which
\nwill be held at the Jakarta Media Center, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Speakers who have already confirmed their attendance include
\neconomists Faisal Basri and Rizal Ramli, international relations
\nexpert Soedjati Djiwandono and historian Hermawan Sulistyo.<\/p>\n
The seminar is part of the National Meeting of Indonesian
\nStudents being held in Jakarta from Jan. 24 to Jan. 29.<\/p>\n
Representatives from six student organizations are scheduled
\nto attend the meeting.<\/p>\n
The seminar is intended to socialize federalism and autonomy
\nterms among students, who are less informed on the topics.<\/p>\n
Committee member Arie Mirjaya said in a media conference here
\non Saturday, \"Those terms are very abstract, and by conducting
\nthe seminar, we'll bring the terms down to earth for students.\"<\/p>\n
He said the seminar is held amid threats of disintegration
\nthroughout the country, as found in Irian Jaya and Riau. (asa)<\/p>",
