Students support Islamic customs<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Hundreds of students rallied at the
\nprovincial legislature here on Thursday demanding the adoption of
\nIslamic principles in the province when the regional autonomy law
\ntakes effect next year.<\/p>\n
The students, who claimed to represent the Joint Forum for
\nMuslim Students (Forbes-PPMI), said they sought the enforcement
\nof Islamic principles because Muslims accounted for the majority
\nof the province's population and the territory had long adopted
\nIslamic traditions.<\/p>\n
In their statement, the students urged the local councillors
\nto support their move and relay the proposal to the central
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
\"From a historical point of view, the adoption of Islamic
\nprinciples is an effort to restore the historical heritage of
\nIslamic kingdoms in South Sulawesi,\" the students leader Iswari
\nAl Farisy said.<\/p>\n
Legislature member Suryadarma, who received the students'
\ndelegation, asked the demonstrators not to use pressure to
\npromote their aspirations. His statement came after four
\ncouncillors were forced to sign their support for the students'
