Students ready for science contest<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU: Riau has selected 80 elementary, junior high and
\nsenior high school students to compete for 40 slots in the
\nNational Science Olympics, due to be held in August in Pekanbaru.<\/p>\n
\"The students come from all over Riau to participate in
\npreparatory programs before they are sent to the Olympics,\" said
\nKasmianto, the Riau supervisor of the programs.<\/p>\n
He said the 80 students would be shortlisted to 60, and a
\nfinal selection of 40 students would take part in the national
\ncompetition.<\/p>\n
\"We're going to develop their self-confidence so that they are
\nready to face the competition, while also hone their analytical
\nand practical skills,\" said Kasmianto.<\/p>\n
He stressed the importance of self-confidence in such
\ngrueling competitions, as was evident during a pre-Olympics
\ncompetition in West Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
He said many students who performed well during the
\npreparatory program scored low at the competition because of a
\nlack of confidence.<\/p>\n
Separately, Riau governor Rusli Zainal said he supported the
\nactivity, considering that at least 1,200 participants would be
\nconverging on Pekanbaru from across the country.<\/p>\n
The event, he added, would be a great practice for the
\nprovince, which would host the Asia-Pacific Olympics in April
\n2005.<\/p>\n
Around 20 countries are to participate in the regional event.<\/p>\n
\"I hope that the selection of Riau as the host of several
\nnational events will make Riau a beacon of education,\" he said.
