Students rally over price hikes<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of students from 10 universities
\nhere held three different demonstrations yesterday, demanding the
\ngovernment guarantees adequate supplies of basic commodities at
\naffordable prices.<\/p>\n
The rally was part of a two-day demonstration by students
\ncalling themselves the Association of Yogyakarta Youth Struggle.<\/p>\n
They included students from the state-run Gadjah Mada
\nUniversity, the Institute of Indonesian Art and the Institute of
\nIslamic Studies.<\/p>\n
The private universities involved were the Yogyakarta
\nUniversity of Muhammadiyah, Janabadra University, Cokroaminoto
\nUniversity, Atma Jaya University, the Islamic University of
\nIndonesia (UII) and the Sanata Dharma University.<\/p>\n
In a joint statement, the students said three decades of
\ndevelopment programs had yet to provide people with justice and
\nprosperity. The repressive approach that the government had
\napplied in dealing with the food crisis would not reduce, much
\nless solve, people's anxiety, the students said.<\/p>\n
"We're not focusing our attention on any form of reforms (that
\nmany others have demanded) or on some elitist issues like the
\nsuccession. What concerns us is the poor. (Presidential)
\nsuccession will mean nothing if the people are still suffering,"
\nstudents coordinator Totok Shabirin said in his speech.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's rally took place at three different campuses: UII,
\nthe University of Janabadra and the University of Sanata Dharma.
