Students protest to Education Ministry<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): More than 100 students demonstrated at the
\nMinistry of Education and Culture yesterday, condemning an attack
\nby soldiers on the Christian University of Indonesia's Cawang
\ncampus in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The students protesting last Monday's incident also came from
\nDr. Mustopo University and the National Science and Technology
\nInstitute.<\/p>\n
They demanded Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman
\nDjojonegoro ask Armed Forces Chief Gen. Feisal Tanjung to take
\nresponsibility for the incident.<\/p>\n
On June 23 soldiers from the Jakarta Military Command in East
\nJakarta entered the nearby campus looking for people who had
\nattacked a soldier. In the process they injured at least five
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
The soldier who was attacked was set upon when passing a group
\nof men from whom another soldier had escaped. Military Command
\nSpokesman Lt. Col. D.J. Nachrowi said last Wednesday that the
\nsoldier who escaped from the angry men had reprimanded them for
\nextorting money.<\/p>\n
The men had tried to attack the unnamed soldier, and vented
\ntheir frustration at the next man who passed in military uniform.<\/p>\n
Campus authorities and the military agreed to settle the
\nmatter amicably. But students said they were not involved in the
\nagreement.<\/p>\n
The demonstrators, who carried banners and read poems, also
\ndemanded campus autonomy.<\/p>\n
The ministry's secretary-general, Hasan Walinono, accompanied
\nby the minister's military expert Brig. Gen. Suharto, met the
\nprotesters.<\/p>\n
Hasan said the dispute between the students from the
\nuniversity and soldiers of the Jakarta Military Command should be
\nsettled in accordance with the law. (jun)<\/p>",
