Students protest high absenteeism<\/p>\n
SALATIGA, Central Java: Hundreds of students of the economic
\nschool of the Christian Satya Wacana University staged a protest
\non Thursday against the management for allowing a high rate of
\nabsenteeism among staff lecturers.<\/p>\n
The students said that many of the lecturers who are notorious
\nfor their failure to turn up for classes are known to be working
\nat other colleges.<\/p>\n
The students urged the university management to take stern
\naction on the basis of university regulations against staff
\nlecturers who moonlight at the expense of teaching hours at Satya
\nWacana.<\/p>\n
The students said they had tried to raise the matter with the
\ndean of the economic school, but to no avail.<\/p>\n
Arief Budiman, an outspoken lecturer at the university, said
\nthat despite opposing the regulations of the university, it was
\nno secret that many staff lecturers are teaching at other
\nuniversities to supplement their incomes.<\/p>\n
\"This may happen because the university leadership has not
\nbeen strict in enforcing the ruling,\" Arief said.<\/p>\n
The protesters and the university management agreed to meet on
\nSept. 28 to resolve this and other problems at the university.
