Students protest army intervention<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: About 300 Gadjah Mada University students staged a
\nprotest yesterday about the military's forcible dispersion of a
\npeaceful demonstration on the campus on Nov. 7.<\/p>\n
The students demanded rector Soekanto Reksohadiprodjo explain
\nwhy he allowed the military to enter the campus grounds. The Nov.
\n7 demonstration, which was dispersed five minutes after it began,
\ndemanded greater freedom for the mass media.<\/p>\n
On Nov. 7, the demonstrators handed out leaflets about their
\ncriticism of the 1994 banning of the Tempo, Detik and Editor news
\nweeklies, the recent revocation of the recommendation for D&R
\nmagazine's chief editor by the Indonesian Journalists
\nAssociation, and the killing of Bernas daily's reporter Fuad
\nMuhammad Syafruddin.<\/p>\n
\"How could you ask outsiders to beat your own students? You
\nshould have protected us,\" a student shouted, when their rector
\ncome to meet them yesterday.<\/p>\n
Soekanto denied he had invited the security officers. \"It was
