Students protest against immunity<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java: A group of students staged a
\ndemonstration at the legislative council's premises yesterday,
\ndemanding that all regulations that give government officials
\nlegal immunity be scrapped.<\/p>\n
Under the watchful eyes of dozens of security officers, the
\nprotesters also demanded that the government stop intervening in
\nreligious institutions' internal affairs.<\/p>\n
The students from various universities also criticized the
\nlegal institutions for discriminating against certain elements of
\nsociety when enforcing the law.<\/p>\n
They filed their petition with speaker of the provincial
\nlegislative council Soeparto.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the protesters Asmono Wilkan said that although
\ntheir demands were heard, they were enraged by Asmono's remarks
\nthat the students looked like "street hoodlums".<\/p>\n
Asmono, he said, was offended because many of the protesters
\nwore thongs, long, messy hair and used abusive words during the
