Students protest against human rights group<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Dozens of Moslem university students staged
\nprotest at the National Police Headquarters on Friday to demand
\nthe executives of the Volunteers for Humanity group be questioned
\nfor spreading groundless information.<\/p>\n
Students, grouped in an union called Hammas, also demanded the
\npolice reveal who is behind the killing spree in Banyuwangi, East
\nJava.<\/p>\n
Arriving in three minibuses, the students marched around the
\nheadquarters and then assembled in front of the police
\ninformation office.<\/p>\n
The arrival of the group caused no major traffic congestion in
\nthe area because police hastily ushered the protesters into the
\ngrounds of the headquarters on Jl. Trunojoyo in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The students tied white ribbons in their hair and accused
\npriest Sandyawan Sumardi, the coordinator of the Volunteers for
\nHumanity, of spreading lies and undermining the country's
\ndignity.<\/p>\n
\"He (Sandyawan) and his group have caused our country to be
\nlabeled as barbaric and racist by the international community,\"
\none of the protesters said.<\/p>\n
Some of the protesters chanted, \"Dismiss the Volunteers for
\nHumanity\".<\/p>\n
Others unfurled banners reading: \"National Police, We Need
\nJustice, Not Bullshit. Mass Rape in May Riots is the Joke of the
\nVolunteers for Humanity Group. Volunteers for Humanity Group (is)
\na great Satan\".<\/p>\n
Muhammad Alfian, who coordinated the protest, said the
\nstudents wanted to give moral support to police efforts to uphold
\nthe law.<\/p>\n
\"How can the Volunteers for Humanity keep their mouth shut
\nwhile dozens have been killed in the Banyuwangi murder spree?<\/p>\n
\"But they blow up the murder of a single girl?\" Alfian said,
\nreferring to Friday's murder of an 18-year-old high school
\nstudent.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the group were received by National Police
\ndeputy spokesman Col. Bambang Haryoko.<\/p>\n
\"The police thank you for reminding us about our duties, but
\nyou must understand that we have limitations,\" Bambang said.<\/p>\n
He promised to pass on the students' demands to National
\nPolice chief Lt. Gen. Roesmanhadi, who was not at the office at
\nthe time.<\/p>\n
Outside the meeting room, other protesters shouted: \"Police,
\nplease choose the people or power.\"<\/p>\n
