Students poisoned during initiation<\/p>\n
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi (JP): At least 52 new students of
\nMakasar University here were rushed to the hospital on Monday
\nsuffering from food poisoning.<\/p>\n
\"I think our lunch was stale,\" said one of the 1,500 students
\ntaking part in the university's initiation program, referring to
\nthe meals provided by the initiation organizers.<\/p>\n
A number of organizers provided the food, including the
\nlunches served in the cafeteria of the School of Education and
\nSocial Sciences. Hundreds of students ate lunch in the cafeteria,
\nand 52 of the students were severely affected.<\/p>\n
They complained of headaches, nausea and vomiting, and were
\ntaken to Labuang Baji Hospital and Faisal Islamic Hospital here.<\/p>\n
The president of the student body, Chaeruddin, accepted
\nresponsibility for the incident, also laying some of the blame on
\ncafeteria managers.<\/p>\n
Dr. Etty Suharti of Faisal Islamic Hospital confirmed the
\nstudents were suffering from food poisoning. \"Fortunately they
\nwere immediately brought to the hospital ... a delay would have
\ncaused dehydration (which could be fatal),\" she said.<\/p>\n
University spokesman Arifin Pasingringi blamed the incident on
\ninitiation organizers, who were mostly students. He said they
\nshould pay for the hospitalization of the students, adding that
\nthe university would pay only a small amount of the hospital
\nbills.<\/p>\n
The students were still hospitalized as of late Monday.
