Students' logic, not result win out<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Getting the right result was not everything for
\nhigh school students competing in the finals of the annual
\nphysics and mathematics competition organized by Atmajaya
\nCatholic University on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
"This is more about process than result," the head of the
\ncompetition committee, Legijono, said as each of the four finals
\nteams fought against the clock to answer questions on a computer
\nscreen.<\/p>\n
"This is an arena for training students' abilities in
\nresearch, writing and presentation," he said of the contest,
\nwhich this year involved 44 senior high schools from Greater
\nJakarta and Lampung.<\/p>\n
Judging was carried out by a panel of lecturers from Atmajaya
\nCatholic University, who presented their particular approach to
\nanswering each of the nine questions on an overhead projector.<\/p>\n
Participants were allowed to argue with the jury if they did
\nnot agree with its approach.<\/p>\n
"There was no one way to answer each question," Legijono said.<\/p>\n
This year's winner was Central Jakarta high school SMUK III
\nBPK Penabur, whose teacher, Susana, said "this kind of
\ncompetition respects logic".<\/p>\n
An earlier competition on scientific writing was won by SMU
\nKanisius in Central Jakarta from 15 entrants.<\/p>\n
The Education and Culture Ministry's director general for
\nprivate schools, Umaedi, said: "education institutions should
\npromote this kind of competition to bring out students'
\nabilities."<\/p>\n
Umaedi said the competition was a "measuring rod for student
\nachievement".<\/p>\n
This year's competition was the third run by the university.
