Students, lecturers protest election<\/p>\n

Students and lecturers from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture
\n(IPB) protested the rectorial election process, saying it lacked
\ntransparency and fairness.<\/p>\n
President of the Students' Executive Board (BEM), Atang
\nTrisnanto, said Saturday that the problem started with the
\nshortlisting of the candidates from nine to five.<\/p>\n
\"We demand an open and transparent explanation about the
\nrequirement which was used (in the screening of the candidates),\"
\nhe told Antara.<\/p>\n
Atang and dozens of lecturers on Friday visited the Academic
\nSenate Secretariat (SA) to make the demand as they considered the
\nelection process undemocratic.<\/p>\n
Last month, students and academics from the institute elected
\nnine candidates. In the next process on Wednesday, the 54-member
\nAcademic Senate Secretariat (SA) shortlisted the nine candidates
\nto five through a secret vote. Economist Didik J. Rachbini as
\nwell as three other candidates, Agus Pakpahan, Irawadi Djamaran
\nand Siswadi, which got the most votes during the previous round,
\nlost in the race.<\/p>\n
They were beaten by AA Mattjik - who is also member of the SA
\n- Eriyatno, HM Aman Wirakartakusumah, Muhamad Achmad Chozin and
\nRizal Syarief.<\/p>\n
The institute's board of trustees will select two names, but
\nit has not decided when the selection process will take place,
\naccording to Ismudi Muchsin of the SA.<\/p>\n
Ismudi denied any irregularities in the electoral process,
\nsaying that everything was in accordance with the procedures.<\/p>\n
The rectorial election, which is open for candidates from
\noutside the campus, is being held by IPB for the first time in
\nits history. This is in accordance with its new status as the
\nstate-owned incorporated entity (BHMN). In 2000 that status was
\ngranted also to the University of Indonesia in Depok, Gadjah Mada
\nUniversity in Yogyakarta and the Bandung Institute of Technology.<\/p>",
