Students launch environmental drive<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): In a turnaround from their usual street
\ncampaigning activities, a group of 105 law students from the
\nUniversity of Indonesia joined the Navy in activities
\ncommemorating Environment Care Week campaign, which commenced on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
\"We have to achieve a balance... not only demonstrating on
\nthe streets,\" chairman of the university's Law Students Senate,
\nDidik Sugiarto, said after a ceremony marking the campaign's
\ncommencement at Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"In an attempt to contribute something to the nation, we --
\nbesides criticizing the government -- will also directly help
\npeople living in coastal areas,\" Didik told Antara.<\/p>\n
Most of the participating students were demonstrators who had
\ntaken to the streets many times to voice antigovernment opinions.<\/p>\n
On this occasion, they were aboard KRI Teluk Cirebon-543, a
\nwarship heading for Lampung in the west to participate in a
\nthree-day voluntary program.<\/p>\n
\"We'll share our knowledge with local people and plant seaweed
\nin the coastal area of Lampung in a bid to help residents cope
\nwith the economic crisis,\" Didik added.<\/p>\n
The students departure on the vessel under the command of Maj.
\nGaguk Handayani, was witnessed by assistant for intelligence
\naffairs from the 2nd Navy Squadron Base, Col. Sutjipto.<\/p>\n
No explanation was given for the selection of a warship as the
\nstudent's mode of transportation.<\/p>\n
Base Commander Commodore La Ode Dayan's speech -- read by
\nSutjipto -- congratulated the \"very important\" student
\ninvolvement because two-thirds of Indonesia is comprised of
\noceans, characterized by complex ecosystems.<\/p>\n
\"That's why the Navy is determined to enlist the support of
