Students join poll on presidency<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): More than 9,500 students from Gadjah Mada
\nUniversity voted Thursday on whether they wished to see the
\nrenomination of President Soeharto for another term.<\/p>\n
To the disappointment of a horde of waiting reporters and
\nstudents the organizers canceled yesterday's planned announcement
\nof the result twice.<\/p>\n
Following discussions behind closed doors, two of the
\norganizers -- Haryo Setyoko and Ridaya La Ode Ngkowe -- said the
\ncancellation was because they wanted to submit the result to the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR) first.<\/p>\n
The country's supreme legislative body will convene next March
\nand elect the next president and vice president.<\/p>\n
Haryo and La Ode refused to explain the cancellation of the
\nannouncement.<\/p>\n
\"There's been no intervention (by outside parties). We just
\nwant to deliver the result to the MPR first,\" Haryo said.<\/p>\n
The poll, in which 9,538 students -- or one third of the
\nuniversity's population -- cast ballots, also asked respondents
\nwhether they were in favor of a limitation on the number of terms
\nany president could serve.<\/p>\n
Gadjah Mada University students are renowned for their
\ninitiative in holding surveys and votes.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, for instance, they held a poll whose result
\nnamed Amien Rais, the chairman of the Muhammadiyah Moslem
