Students introduced to marine life<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Seventy students, who have been selected from various
\nhigh schools in Jakarta, are taking part in a four-day training
\ncourse organized by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences.<\/p>\n
The course, which opened at the institute's marine research
\nheadquarters at Ancol, North Jakarta, yesterday aims at providing
\nbasic knowledge on marine resources.<\/p>\n
Sulistijo, chairman of the organizing committee, said the
\nstudents will have the opportunity to observe marine life at the
\ninstitute's laboratory on the Pari Island, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the program, Anugerah Nontji, head of the
\ninstitute's research and development center for oceanology, said
\nthe training program also aims at reminding students of
\nIndonesian ancestors' glorious past as seafarers.<\/p>\n
Anugerah said that Indonesia's development programs still
\nfocus on land although its seas, which constitute most of its
\nterritory, have tremendous resources yet to be exploited.<\/p>\n
\"We have somewhat overlooked marine development,\" he said.
