Students hit streets again, creating traffic jams<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): More than 1000 students and activists grouped
\nunder the Greater Jakarta Students Movement (Gema Jaya) and the
\nCommittee for Oppressed People (Karat) rallied at the Hotel
\nIndonesia roundabout and the State Palace on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Gema Jaya student activists, coming from seven universities,
\narrived at the roundabout with 25 metromini buses at 5 p.m,
\ncausing heavy congestion.<\/p>\n
Ten minutes later, Karat activists from two universities and
\nvarious community activists from different parts of the city,
\narrived at the roundabout in 20 buses.<\/p>\n
Some of the students then distributed handouts to passing
\nmotorists and staged speeches.<\/p>\n
The students left the roundabout at 5:30 p.m. for the state
\npalace and then dispersed peacefully at dusk.<\/p>\n
Gema coordinator Ratno Yulianto told The Jakarta Post inside a
\nminivan that led the bus convoy that they wanted to press for the
\nestablishment of a transitional government as the current
\ngovernment was proven ineffective in carrying out the reform
\nagenda.<\/p>\n
Before the establishment of such a transitional government,
\nRatno said President Abdurrahman Wahid would have to disband the
\nlegislature and establish a new body that would represent the
\npeople and then he must resign.<\/p>\n
He said that the legislature must be disbanded because they
\nwere controlled by people who were part of the New Order. He
\nnoted that meant 70 percent of legislators at the House of
\nRepresentatives and People's Consultative Assembly.<\/p>\n
The transitional government, according to the Gema activists,
\nwould then be required to rid the bureaucracy of all remnants of
\nthe New Order regime. He said about 80 percent of people who
\ncurrently work for the government remained the same as those
\nunder the New Order regime.<\/p>\n
He noted that most of the institutions in the country were
\nstill controlled by New Order people, including the military, the
\npolice, judicial bodies, the media, and also non-governmental
\norganizations.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore, there is only one way to solve all the problems in
\nthis country: systemic revolution, changing the New Order
\ngovernmental system to a system that really sides with the
\npeople,\" he remarked, without giving any explanation on the new
