Students hit by odd malady<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Members of a Buton regency high
\nschool were relocated last week to the nearest elementary school
\nafter many female students complained of a mysterious ailment.<\/p>\n
Despite the young women's claims of suffering seizures, Pulau
\nMakasar high school principal Bibu Kari said Thursday that Buton
\nhealth officers had failed to find anything medically wrong with
\nthem. The teenagers claimed the seizures stopped when they left
\ntheir classrooms.<\/p>\n
Antara news agency quoted Bibu as saying that \"90 percent\" of
\nthe female students were affected.<\/p>\n
Teachers and parents held Koran readings and sacrificed two
\ngoats in an effort to end the ailment, but the complaints
\ncontinued.<\/p>\n
Idris, an official of the Buton health team which visited the
\nschool, said he suspected nonmedical causes of the seizures.<\/p>\n
Buton residents say the symptoms are known as samauda, which
\nthey said could be caused by troubled men whose marriage
\nproposals were rejected. Idris suggested the school and parents
\nshould seek the help of traditional healers.<\/p>",
