Students for Soeharto's 'street trial'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Some 1,000 university students rallied on Jl.
\nSalemba Raya, Central Jakarta on Thursday, demanding a "people's
\ncourt" to try former president Soeharto.<\/p>\n
The protesters included members from the City Forum (Forkot),
\nCollective Forum (Forbes), Students Action Front for Reform and
\nDemocracy (Famred) and Oppressed People's Community (Karat).<\/p>\n
They blocked the street and erected a stage near the
\nintersection of Jl. Salemba Raya and Jl. Kramat Raya, to orate,
\nrecite poetry and sing.<\/p>\n
Passersby stopped to watch while traffic was redirected.<\/p>\n
No clashes were reported during the rally which was under
\nclose police supervision.<\/p>\n
A Famred member, Jon, said that the rally was a campaign to
\nhave Soeharto and his cronies tried in a "street court" and have
\nthe government confiscate his properties.<\/p>\n
"The official court isn't able to administer justice because
\nSoeharto's cronies are still influential among the authorities,"
\nsaid Jon, a student of the Jakarta University in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Another protester, Doni, added that protesters planned to stay
\nthe night at the location and continue their demands.<\/p>\n
Following the dismissal of corruption charges against the
\nformer president last Thursday, clashes between anti-Soeharto
\nprotesters, pro-Soeharto protesters and the police had left some
