Students don't like informants<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java: About 1,000 students of the Diponegoro
\nUniversity staged a protest demanding that rector Muladi remove
\nintel, or plain-clothes intelligent officers, from the campus.<\/p>\n
\"The presence of intel clearly degrades the campus, which
\nshould be an autonomous center of excellence. The officers, both
\nfrom the police and the army, interfere with campus autonomy and
\nthey should be removed,\" Subarno, one of the participating
\nstudents in free forum, said.<\/p>\n
Muladi, who also attended the forum, said the presence of the
\nofficers did not interfere with campus autonomy, which is only
\nrelevant in the case of scientific matters. The campus, he said,
\nhas no legal territorial autonomy.<\/p>\n
Muladi said the campus should not be considered \"safe\" because
\ncrime could occur. \"If there was a case of rape, for instance,
\nsecurity officers must enter the campus,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He assured that as long as students did not violate the law,
\nthere was no reason to be afraid or suspicious of the officers.<\/p>\n
\"Just let them in. Luckily, they could even become smarter
\nafter frequent visits to the campus,\" Muladi, who is also a
