Students determine studies to support career<\/p>\n

Education should be fun. It is much better if it supports the
\ncareer one interested in.<\/p>\n
But Tora Sudiro, 32, named best local actor at the Panasonic
\nAwards show earlier this month, never got the approval from his
\nparents to get into art school, although he had shown his
\ninterests in music and acting.<\/p>\n
His father told him to take financial insurance as his major.<\/p>\n
\"Becoming an artist is good, but it is better if you take
\ninsurance as your major because it may lead you to a more
\nprospective career,\" the father of two recalled his father's
\nwords.<\/p>\n
Tora obeyed his father. He graduated and worked in an
\ninsurance company. He quit after three months.<\/p>\n
Tora shared his bad experience about education at a seminar on
\nstudy and careers organized by the Swiss German University in
\nBumi Serpong Damai, Tangerang, on Saturday, attended by teachers,
\nstudents and their parents from Jakarta and Tangerang.<\/p>\n
Education expert Arief Rachman said Tora was an example of a
\nvictim of parents' choices, who forced their wishes on their
\nchildren to study in certain subjects without considering the
\ntalents and interests of their children.<\/p>\n
\"Children will lose their great potential if parents force
\nthem to study in certain subjects, which they do not like. In the
\nmore extreme situation, it may cause frustration.\"<\/p>\n
He said that to help children to choose their education, there
\nare several approaches, including psychological tests to identify
\nthe children's talents and interests.<\/p>\n
According to Arief, interests of the children should become
\nthe first consideration in deciding the subject of education,
\nwhile talent should be second.<\/p>\n
\"A child may be good in math, but he puts high interest on
\nsociology. In that case, it is better for such children to take
\nsociology as their major. They will have great motivation there,\"
\nsaid Arief, who is also a lecturer at Jakarta University (UNJ).<\/p>\n
According to Arief, pressing children to take certain
\nsubjects, which children may in fact not like, may spark negative
\nimpacts like frustration and underachievement due to lack of
\nmotivation.<\/p>\n
In the case of Tora, who played the main role in several art
\nand commercial movies as well as performing in the popular
\nExtravaganza comedy show, Arief said that he was lucky being able
\nto exploit his own talent without having to take a formal
\neducation on acting.<\/p>\n
\"I believe that education is the most important factor for the
\nfuture of our children. We cannot expect that all people will
\nhave what Tora has, who is successful in his profession without a
\nformal education in it,\" said Arief.<\/p>\n
But to find out what he had missed, Arief encouraged Tora to
\nget further education on acting.<\/p>\n
\"You will be more successful ... Most of the Academy Award
\nwinners have strong educational backgrounds in acting,\" he
\nclaimed.<\/p>",
