Students demand Tunky's resignation<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: About 50 students staged a demonstration at the
\ncampus of Gadjah Mada University yesterday against the rise of
\npaper prices.<\/p>\n
Organized by the Yogyakarta Student Publication Association,
\nthe banner-waving protesters demanded that Minister of Industry
\nTunky Ariwibowo resign and that the government lower paper
\nprices.<\/p>\n
They also demanded that the government put an end to
\noligopolistic and monopolistic practices in the paper industry.<\/p>\n
Sunarto Cipto Harjono, the association's secretary-general,
\nsaid paper prices in Yogyakarta had risen by between 40 percent
\nand 200 percent. \"This is just unthinkable,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that the crisis had been engineered by paper producers
\nwho meant to extract as much profit as possible to the detriment
\nof the public.<\/p>\n
\"The government is too slow in responding to the crisis,\"
