Students demand legal action<\/p>\n
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Around 500 students yesterday
\ndemonstrated at the governor's office, demanding that the
\ngovernment and the military complete planned legal action against
\nsoldiers allegedly responsible for the death of three friends of
\ntheirs.<\/p>\n
The demonstration was held to coincide with the 90th day
\nanniversary of the death of Syaiful Bya, M. Tasyrif and Andi
\nSultan during a student protest which ended in a clash with
\nsecurity forces in April.<\/p>\n
The students visited the grave of Tasyrif, prayed there and
\nmarched carrying banners emblazoned with criticism of the
\ngovernment and the military. \"We're tired of promises,\" read one.
\n\"Our friends' blood can never be repaid,\" said another.<\/p>\n
The chief of the Wirabuana regional military command, Maj.
\nGen. Sulatin, had promised to summon to a military tribunal 12
\nsoldiers accused of \"responding excessively\" to the student
\nprotests against public transport fare hikes in April.<\/p>\n
It was during one of these protests that the students died.<\/p>\n
One of the demonstrating students, Bachtiar, accused the
\ngovernment and the military of trying to backtrack by not
\nbringing the soldiers to court after all.<\/p>\n
\"Unless the case is handled transparently, the people here
\nwill no longer trust the government and the military,\" Yahya
\nMustafa, an activist of a local non-governmental organization,
