Students demand friends' release<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: A group of students claiming to represent seven
\nstudent organizations demanded here on Tuesday the release of
\nnine of their colleagues arrested in connection with unrest on
\nthe Sumatra island of Bintan in January.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the group Rafael Situmorang condemned the
\narrests as arbitrary, saying the students were advocating local
\nresidents seeking fair compensation for the land they had sold to
\ninvestors.<\/p>\n
\"We were concerned about the people's fate. That is why we
\ndecided to go to Bintan and offer advocacy,\" Rafael from the
\nBandung Institute of Technology said.<\/p>\n
Rafael was among the activists advocating the Bintan
\nresidents. He escaped when the police moved to disperse hundreds
\nof protesters who occupied Inti Industrial Estate in Lodam, North
\nBintan.<\/p>\n
A total of 44 people were arrested during the operation. They
\nare now being held at the East Riau Police precinct and facing
\ncharges of provoking unrest and possessing sharp weapons.
