Students attacked over gambling row<\/p>\n
PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: At least 40 people, armed with guns
\nand sharp weapons raided the local office of the Indonesian
\nMuslim Students' Association (HMI) on Jl. Radial on Friday and
\nattacked students inside the building.<\/p>\n
The students said that the attackers, believed to be thugs
\nworking for gambling operators, brandished guns and knives,
\nkicked and beat any students they met in the office.<\/p>\n
\"The attack started at about 7:30 a.m. when the mob stormed
\nthe building, assaulting anyone they met. The action stopped 30
\nminutes later,\" Budi, one of the students, said.<\/p>\n
Rebo Iskandar, chairman of the HMI Palembang branch office,
\nsaid that the attack might be linked to the students' plan for an
\nanti-gambling demonstration.<\/p>\n
\"We had been told by gang members to cancel the protest
\nagainst the rampant operation of gambling houses. We assume that
\nthe attackers were the thugs who guard the gambling houses,\" Rebo
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Soon after the attack, the students marched to South Sumatra
\nPolice headquarters to meet chief Insp. Gen. Suparto.<\/p>\n
The students also asked Suparto to have all illicit gambling
\ndens sealed off soon.<\/p>\n
Suparto promised to take prompt and appropriate action.<\/p>\n
The students said that the gambling houses dealt with billions
