Students ask police to crack down on gambling<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Dozens of students staged a protest in front of
\ncity police headquarters here on Monday demanding that the police
\nact firmly against gambling dens in the capital.<\/p>\n
The protesters, grouped in the Students and Youth Alliance for
\nLegal Supremacy (AMPUSH) said the police knew about gambling dens
\nin the capital, like the biggest one on Jl. Kunir in North
\nJakarta, but that they took no action as they were (allegedly)
\nreceiving kickbacks from the gambling operators.<\/p>\n
\"As the police are keeping quiet about gambling crimes, we
\nsuspect that they are in cahoots with the gambling operators,\"
\nthe coordinator of the protesting group, Rahmat, said.<\/p>\n
The group also demanded that the police sanction officers who
\nwere believed to be protecting the gambling dens.<\/p>\n
In a related development, Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen.
\nSofjan Jacoeb said that 98 people were arrested for gambling
\ncrimes during a two-day operation in the capital.<\/p>\n
Sofjan said the suspects were arrested at nine separate
\nlocations but gave no details.<\/p>\n
The two-star general was tightlipped when asked whether the
\nsuspects were minor gambling operators, like the sellers of toto
\ncoupons, or gambling den owners. (emf)<\/p>",
