Students against street brawls<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Hundreds of students from several schools
\nstaged a protest on Saturday in Cibodas, Jatiuwung district here,
\ncondemning an upward trend in student brawls.<\/p>\n
The protesting students, who called themselves members of the
\nIndonesian Islamic Students Movement, held a free speech forum
\nand unfurled banners, some of which read The Bogor Incident
\nshould not be Repeated.<\/p>\n
The students were referring to a recent Bogor brawl which left
\n14 students drowned in Cisadane River.<\/p>\n
Ardiyansyah, one of the protesting students, said the protest
\nwas not only meant to prevent students from participating in
\nbrawls, but all the nation's people.<\/p>\n
\"We just do not want students of this nation, particularly
\nTangerang students, to be involved in brawls. We condemn all
\nkinds of brawls,\" Ardiyansyah said.<\/p>\n
The protest was initially planned to be held as a long march,
\nbeginning at Cibodas and ending at the Tangerang office of the
\nMinistry of Education and Culture at Cikokol, tens of kilometers
\naway from the area.<\/p>\n
However, Tangerang authorities forbade it with the reason that
\nthe march could be taken advantage of by provocateurs.<\/p>\n
No representatives of the Tangerang office of the Ministry of
\nEducation and Culture showed up, even though they had been asked
\nto attend the protest to convey their protest. The protest ended
