Student testifies against friends<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A member of the student regiment from the
\nNational University told Judge Moegihardjo of South Jakarta
\nDistrict Court that he saw one of the six defendants being tried
\nthrowing bottles filled with gasoline into the regiment's
\nheadquarters.<\/p>\n
\"I saw the defendant Yahdi Djamhur and his two friends, Tori
\nand Rivai throw some stones and bottles, which were filled with
\ngasoline, into the regiment's headquarters,\" said Irvan Alfarija,
\nwho has been a regiment member since 1989.<\/p>\n
The six defendants are Yahdi Djamhur, Reza Pahlevi, Darmawan
\nBahtiar, Rakai Aria Dipa Erlangga, Benedictus Satrio Widyanarto
\nand Budi Murdiyanto.<\/p>\n
They are among 12 students -- all members of the Association
\nof Nature Lovers (Himpala) accused of intentionally assaulting
\nfour members of the university's student regiment and of burning
\nthe regiment's headquarters on Oct. 18.<\/p>\n
The alleged attack came after regiment members reportedly
\ndestroyed the association's secretariat on Oct. 14, last year.<\/p>\n
The judge then asked Irvan if he was sure that the bottles
\nwere filled with gasoline and the witness said he was sure.<\/p>\n
Irvan said he went to campus at about 11 a.m. and at about 12
\np.m. he heard an explosion at the regiment's headquarters.<\/p>\n
\"I went to the office of the deputy rector for academic
\naffairs to report the fire. Then I saw many Himpala members
\nbanging on the office door as they tried to force their way into
\nthe room,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Irvan then told the judge that the Himpala members forced
\nBambang Permadi, the university's Deputy Rector for Academic
\nAffairs, out of the room while the rest, including Yahdi and
\nDarmawan started beating him with wooden sticks.<\/p>\n
Irvan's testimony prompted Makdir Ismail, a lawyer from the
\nJakarta Legal Aid Foundation representing the six defendants, to
\nask the judge to arrest the witness for giving false evidence.<\/p>\n
Lawyer Makdir quoted Bambang Permadi, from an earlier trial
\nsession, as saying that the defendant, Syech Al Djufri, came to
\nhim, asking him to calm down more than one hundred students who
\nhad gathered in the university compound protesting the existence
\nof the regiment.<\/p>\n
\"The deputy rector never said that he was forced out of his
\nown room and I request the Honorable Judge to arrest the witness
\nfor violating his oath to tell the court the truth,\" Makdir said.<\/p>\n
However, the judge said that the decision to arrest or not
\narrest was his authority. \"I will discuss your plea with the
\nmembers of board of judges first,\" he said.<\/p>\n
After Judge Moegihardjo finished examining Irvan he asked the
\nsix defendants their opinion of Irvan's testimony and they all
\ntold the judge that they objected to it.<\/p>\n
\"Your Honor, his testimony is nothing but slander. We strongly
\nobject to it,\" Yahdi said.<\/p>\n
During the session, the public spectators heckled Irvan when
\nhe told the judge that he was the regiment's security chief,
\nauthorized to take care of and anticipate all kinds of scenes
\nwhich could hamper the campus's security.<\/p>\n
However, when the defendants' lawyer asked him if he knew that
\nsome regiment members had destroyed the secretariat of Himpala
\nseveral days before the Oct. 18 incident, he said that he knew
\nnothing about the incident.<\/p>\n
Again, his statement made the public heckle him. One man made
\nsound of a chicken.<\/p>\n
Judge Moegihardjo then adjourned the session for 30 minutes
\nfor the afternoon prayer. The proceedings continued with
\nexamination Sandy Refdinal Ronazi, an alumnus of the Social and
\nPolitical Science School of the National University who is also a
\nregiment member.<\/p>\n
Before the session re-opened, defendant Reza Pahlevi told the
\njudge that the security officers had prohibited the defendants
\nfrom leaving their cells to perform their afternoon prayers, so
\nthey were forced to perform them in the dirty cell.<\/p>\n
\"You will have a decent place to pray during the next
\nsessions,\" Moegihardjo said.<\/p>\n
During the session, Sandy said that he came to campus at 11
\na.m., to pay the graduation ceremony fee.<\/p>\n
\"I was hanging out behind the security guard post with my
\nfriends Irsal Karmani and Wasis when Himpala members attacked
