Student jailed for possessing heroin<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta District Court sentenced a
\nsenior high school student yesterday to two months and 20 days in
\nprison for possessing putaw, a low-grade heroin.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Rusdi As'ad said police arrested defendant
\nRico Ardiansayah, 16, on Aug. 13 in a raid on Jl. Banyumas,
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Rusdi said two police officers approached Rico and his friends
\nand asked why they were loitering on the street during school
\nhours.<\/p>\n
When Rico was asked to produce his identification card, he
\nflung four small plastic packages behind him, he said.<\/p>\n
One of the officers picked up the packages and discovered they
\ncontained heroin, he said.<\/p>\n
Rico admitted to buying the putaw for Rp 20,000 (US$5.50) a
\npackage from someone in front of Robinson's Department Store in
\nSenen, Central Jakarta, he said.<\/p>\n
The first-grade student told police he had bought the heroin
\nfor personal use, he said.<\/p>\n
Rusdi said he gave Rico a lenient sentence because he was
\nstill young and it was only 0.07 grams of putaw.<\/p>\n
\"Rico also voiced regret over his behavior and promised not to
\ndo it again,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Rico was charged under Article 23 (c) of Law No. 9\/1973 on
\nnarcotics.<\/p>\n
The article carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail
\nor a fine of up to Rp 15 million.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Tony Spontana had requested that the court sentence
\nRico to three months in jail. (jun)<\/p>",
