Student dies after abortion<\/p>\n

A student at a private university in Yogyakarta, Rini Wulandari,
\ndied after undergoing an illegal abortion in the fifth month of
\nher pregnancy, police said here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The Sleman Police said they had detained Rini's boyfriend,
\nErik Heri Suryanto, and midwife Ngatirah, 55, who allegedly
\nperformed the abortion.<\/p>\n
According to police, Ngatirah gave Rini, 22, a concoction of
\ntraditional medicine when the student came to her house in the
\nvillage of Sardono in Ngaglik subdistrict, Sleman regency, on
\nFriday night seeking an abortion.<\/p>\n
The midwife asked Rini to return on Saturday. Accompanied by
\nErik, Rini came back to the midwife's house the following day,
\nwhere her stomach was massaged by Ngatirah.<\/p>\n
However, Rini began to hemorrhage and passed out. She was
\nrushed to a hospital in Ngaglik.<\/p>\n
Ngaglik Police chief Adj. Comr. Darwin S. Elipas said Rini was
\nthought to have died while still in the midwife's house.<\/p>\n
However, in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime, the
\nvictim was brought to the hospital, he said.<\/p>\n
\"According to the autopsy, she bled to death during the
\nabortion,\" Darwin said.<\/p>\n
He said the police investigation had found evidence that
\nNgatirah had performed abortions on at least four women.<\/p>\n
\"Ngatirah, the victim's boyfriend and Suryani (a broker) are
\nbeing held for further questioning,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Darwin said the three suspects could be charged with violating
\nArticle 348 of the Criminal Code on abortion, which carries a
\nmaximum penalty of seven years in jail.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists, Ngatirah admitted to performing a
\nnumber of abortions.<\/p>\n
She said she generally charged patients Rp 1.5 million (about
\nUS$176) per abortion. But because Rini was a student, her
\nabortion cost Rp 700,000, from which Rp 150,000 was given to
\nSuryani as a fee.<\/p>",
